Acupressure is a style of bodywork that works with the acupuncture point meridian system and the release of stuck qi in these points on the body. I am a Certified Massage Therapist (C.M.T.) in a Chinese style of acupressure called Tui Na.

Tui Na literally translates to "Push Pull". A dynamic and therapeutic style of bodywork used extensively in orthopedic departments in hospitals throughout China, it can be applied vigorously to rehabilitate an injured area or applied lightly to gently promote circulation and relaxation.

To those who have received Shiatsu, Thai and Swedish style massage, Tui Na may seem like a cross of the three. Like Shiatsu, Tui Na is performed with the patient clothed so there is no need to undress. Combining techniques similar to Swedish massage, it is much more than a therapy for relaxation. Its rhythmic movements and transitions from one body part to another incorporate kneading, pressing, shaking, percussion, rolling, traction, passive stretching and joint range of motion stretching similar to Thai Massage.

Tui Na is distinct from other styles of bodywork because of its ability to focus on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints, and skeletal system. It is easily combined with Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy. Tui Na is especially effective for joint pain (such as arthritis), sciatica, muscle spasms, and pain along the back, neck, and shoulders. It also helps patients with other conditions such as insomnia, headaches (including migraines), and the tension associated with stress.
